What is Go Folic!?

To ‘Go Folic!’ means to take extra folic acid (Vitamin B9) before you get pregnant and during the early weeks of pregnancy.

Why Go Folic!?

When is the right time to Go Folic!?

If there is any chance you might become pregnant, then the right time to Go Folic! is NOW.

Ideally, you need to begin taking folic acid tablets at least 3 months before pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, start taking folic acid at once and continue each day until the end of your 12th week of pregnancy.

How do I get the extra folic acid I need?

Although some food contains folic acid you will still need to take tablets as well. Most women need a 400mcg tablet of folic acid each day before conception and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Some women ( for example, diabetics) need to take more folic acid (5mg daily) because they are in a higher risk group

Where can I get Folic Acid tablets?

You can buy tablets containing 400mcg folic acid in chemists, supermarkets and health stores (including online) or you may be eligible to get these tablets free on prescription. All women in high risk groups need to see their GP and ask for the higher 5mg dose which is only available on prescription.
